Forced to CHICKEN out

Another dismal, spine-chilling story on the front-page to jolt me out of my reverie in a sleepy morning class. I stared in horror at what I read. The article ruthlessly screamed out: Chief secretary R M Premkumar ordered eight lakh chickens within the taluka to be slaughtered in the next 48 hours! The article goes on to lament the fact bird flu has hit Maharashtra, which is what's making our dear Mr.Premkumar a.k.a self-proclaimed Yamadev revel in a dance of death by ordering the mass slaughter that he has. At the risk of diluting the seriousness of the issue, I must say: On a lighter note, it's weird how the govt officials made a funny fool of themselves. Just as Mr.Premkumar ordered that 2 lakh chickens should be slaughtered to combat the disease, State health secretary Dr Vijay Satbir Singh said the district administration had been instructed to close all slaughter houses in Nawapur and the surrounding areas to combat the disease! :) It happens only in India!

Well, well, well, let us dig in a lil more into the chicken-y facts.Bird flu is, no doubt a deadly viral epidemic caused by the H5N1 avian influenza virus. As reported here, these influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them.

Let us see what warrants a mass-slaughter.It is true that, of the few avian influenza viruses that have crossed the species barrier to infect humans, H5N1 has caused the largest number of detected cases of severe disease and death in humans. It is also true that, in the current outbreaks in Asia and Europe, more than half of those infected with the virus have died. In fact, if H5N1 virus were to gain the capacity to spread easily from person to person, an influenza pandemic (worldwide outbreak of disease) could begin. Accepted.HOWEVER, I now wish to draw a close parallel, replacing poultry with humans. The HIV virus that causes the incurable AIDS disease spreads only through infected-blood tranfusion and/or sexual contact. Bird flu spreads to humans only through close contact with infected animals and/or surfaces contaminated by their saliva/faeces. AIDS too, if left unchecked, could become a pandemic. Both these diseases are fatal. Both are currently incurable. AIDS has constantly been claiming thousands of lives, while this particular outbreak of bird flu has claimed ONE life so far. What then, justifies the meting out of mass-slaughter to as many as 2 lakh chickens, most of which might not even be infected yet? Why don't we slaughter AIDS_affected humans as well? Aren't they equally dangerous? What right do we, who weren't responsible for the creation of life, have, to take away lives? What was done to plague victims/smallpox victims when there were no vaccines for these diseases? Weren't they all just quarantined and kept at a safe distance to prevent the burgeoning of the epidemic into a pandemic? Why then, can't these chicken be quarantined too, if they are found to be affected?

There's so much hue and cry about euthanasia. Even when people want to die, we force them to hang on for dear life; even when chickens want to hang on for dear life, we force them to chicken out of life! Strange indeed are the murky ways of our perky world.

Hi,
I just wonder about latest virus, which effectively shut down all online activity of Chase Manhattan Bank. In total disregard of Chase attempts to keep it inside news, this chicken still gets out to the public as well.
How this will affect us coverage in general?
Thanks

hi, nice parallel there between Bird Flu and AIDS.

Slaughtering of 8 lakh chickens, is it justified?. Im not supporting this judgement, but just trying to figure out why this culling may (will) not create an uproar. Most of the people are of the opinion that these chicken are reared to be slaughtered, so to slaughter these chicken to prevent a pandemic seems a good enough reason for most of them. And also most of them will have their sympathy for the owner of the chicken farm (losses), but not for the chicken which are being slaughtered...

This mindset maybe because Humans(most of them) are of the opinion that this world was created for them, to satisfy their needs, by a GOD who is similar to them (atleast in appearance).

You know, a girl from our college committed suicide two days ago. While I sympathize with the chickens, forgive me when I say I feel sorrier, so to speak, for the girl than for the chickens.

I actually agree it's abhorring that such a vicious and amazingly stupid step has been decided upon by this man named, ironically, Premkumar. Where's the prem in this move? Perhaps such stupidity is a natural outcome of non-vegetarianism? ("I'm a veggie and I'm proud of it!!" -- from his famous song, Denis Leary paraphrased.)

Yes, before you say it, suicide is an act of cowardice. But she did write a rather poignant note.

Infected poultry is not slaughtered in slaughter houses as it can increase the risk of infection.

What then, justifies the meting out of mass-slaughter to as many as 2 lakh chickens, most of which might not even be infected yet?

Is that hard to guess? Those chickens were anyway reared to be killed and eaten. Now, instead of eating, they are burried.

[Anon]: Dude!Iam at a loss to understand how the outbreak of bird flu in India is even remotely related to how US coverage would be affected by a software virus infecting Chase Manhattan's systems! If you're connecting the two, you either have no idea what bird flu's all about or you're an incomprehensible genius at intertwining separate concepts at stellar distances from one another!Which ever you may be, all I can do is offer my two-paise worth on the Chase Manhattan issue:
It’s not a virus. It’s an archive of an application, disguised as a jpeg by cleverly using the super secret hacker technique to trick Mac users into infecting their systems. It’s not spread by iChat -someone may send a file that way, but if you’re stupid enough to double-click an unexpected file sent to you via IM, well, Darwin is at work… It’s not as though simply viewing a jpg image in a browser would infect your Mac, unlike some other systems out there. You actually have to explicitly accept the download, expand the archive, double-click the application, and provide your username and password before any damage can be done.

[Anoop]:Homo Sapiens rule the Earth!Wonder how long that'll last though...

[Arjun]:Pity the girl who killed herself more than you'd pity the death of a chicken?Hmmm, knowing you, maybe 'girl' is the key :-p

[hims]:The point on infection's valid."Reared to be killed" sounds too inhuman somehow.

Though u drew a nice parellel, the human race is considered to be intelligent and capable of understanding and learning.
Aids can be prvented if sufficient care or protection is taken into consideration and we born as humans have been educated about the facts. Whereas in the case of chicken, it would not be possible to educate them to stop spreading the virus. And another point is, if we are careful AIDS cannot get near to us, but how do we protect ourselves from a chicken virus??

We humans have a family and death of any human is greater loss than a chicken which shall die in a few weeks time to satisfy a human taste bud.
